Spouse Work Permit

The Spouse/Common-Law Partner Open Work Permit allows the spouse or common-law partner of certain temporary residents in Canada to work for any employer without needing a job offer or Labour Market Impact Assessment (LMIA). This type of open work permit enables the holder to work for any employer in any job and even be self-employed during the permit's validity period. The duration of this permit matches that of the spouse's or partner's study or work permit, and it can be renewed simultaneously when the spouse's or partner's permit is extended.

Requirements:

  • Your spouse/common-law partner is an international student.

  • Your spouse/common-law partner is a foreign worker who:

  • Is authorized to work in Canada for at least six months.

  • Meets the minimum requirements for their job (usually at least a college diploma) and works in an occupation classified as NOC 0, A, or B.

  • Applicants awaiting inland spousal sponsorship immigration: After submitting the immigration application, the applicant can apply for this type of open work permit.
