Study Permit

A study permit is an official document issued by Immigration, Refugees, and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) that allows foreign nationals to study at designated learning institutions (DLIs) in Canada. A study permit is not a visa and does not, by itself, allow you to enter Canada. You may also need a visitor visa or an electronic travel authorization (eTA).

Why Do You Need a Study Permit?

If you plan to study in Canada for more than six months, you must obtain a study permit. It grants you the legal authorization to stay in Canada for the duration of your study program and possibly work while studying under certain conditions.

  • Acceptance Letter: Have an acceptance letter from a DLI in Canada.

  • Proof of Financial Support: Show you have sufficient funds to cover tuition, living expenses, and return transportation.

  • No Criminal Record: Provide a police certificate if required.

  • Good Health: Undergo a medical examination if required.

  • Intent to Leave Canada: Prove to an immigration officer that you will leave Canada at the end of your studies.

Application Process:

  • Obtain an Acceptance Letter: Apply to and be accepted by a DLI in Canada.

  • Gather Documents: Collect required documents including proof of identity, proof of financial support, and the acceptance letter.

  • Apply Online or on Paper: Complete the study permit application form (IMM 1294) and submit it online or at a Visa Application Centre (VAC).

  • Biometrics and Medical Exam: Provide biometric information and undergo a medical exam if required.

  • Pay the Application Fee: Pay the study permit application fee.

  • Processing Time: Wait for the application to be processed. Processing times vary by country.

  • Receive Decision: If approved, you will receive a Port of Entry (POE) Letter of Introduction and, if needed, a temporary resident visa (TRV) or eTA.

  • Travel to Canada: Present your POE Letter of Introduction and other required documents to a Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA) officer at your port of entry.

  • Issuance of Study Permit: The CBSA officer will issue your study permit upon arrival in Canada.

Key Features and Benefits:

  • Work While Studying: Most study permits allow you to work part-time on or off-campus during your studies and full-time during scheduled breaks.

  • Pathway to Permanent Residency: Completing studies in Canada can be a pathway to obtaining permanent residency through programs like the Post-Graduation Work Permit (PGWP) and Canadian Experience Class (CEC).

  • Quality Education: Canada is known for its high-quality education system and multicultural environment, making it an attractive destination for international students.

Extensions and Renewals:

  • Extend Your Stay: If you need more time to complete your program, you can apply to extend your study permit.

  • Post-Graduation Work Permit (PGWP): After completing your studies, you may be eligible to apply for a PGWP to gain valuable Canadian work experience.
